COMMERCE DEPARTMENT ORDERS AI FIRM TO SUSPEND ACCESS FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS

The U.S. Commerce Department on Friday at 5:21 p.m. Eastern Time instructed Anthropic to suspend access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all foreign nationals, inside and outside the United States, including the company's own non-American employees. The Department cited a jailbreak reportedly identified by another firm and designated the systems a national security concern.

In its public response, the company asked whether the most advanced system it had ever built, one designed to find vulnerabilities no prior product could, had been found critically flawed within forty-eight hours on the basis of a report it had not been shown. The report could not be shared, the Department explained, because disclosing the security flaw would compromise security. The Department did not address the question. Unable to verify nationality at login, Anthropic disabled access for everyone.

Brothcast Journal correspondent Kevin Dunnehey, a United States passport holder since birth, was denied access during the compliance review. Asked whether his parents were American, he confirmed they were, but mentioned the family had Italian origins. The officer noted this and concluded he was therefore not entirely American. Dunnehey has been reassigned to manually digitize Ellis Island arrival records from 1923. As of press time, he reports finding a Vincenzo Dunnehey from Caserta.
