Following the arrest of a Sudanese asylum seeker on charges of attempted murder in connection with a stabbing in north Belfast on Monday, the family of victim Stephen Ogilvie released a statement asking the public for calm. Riots broke out across the city.

The family released a second statement. "We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility," they said. Police deployed water cannons.

The family clarified that they meant it. Twenty-seven people were made homeless after rioters went door-to-door searching for immigrants. The fire brigade attended 62 incidents. A Turkish barber shop in Ballyclare was attacked.

Ogilvie lost his left eye in the attack. His family has asked that no further violence be carried out on his behalf. At time of publication, this request has been partially acknowledged.
