Researchers at Sweden's Uppsala Conflict Data Program have recorded 65 active conflicts in 2025, the highest number since data collection began in 1946. The number of direct conflicts between individual states doubled from the previous year to eight. Approximately 244,600 people were killed, the highest figure since the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
The Russia-Ukraine war accounted for 62% of all battle-related deaths, with an estimated 77,700 fatalities on the Russian side and 14,000 on the Ukrainian. The researchers noted that the trend of rising interstate conflicts has been building over the past decade and "cannot be explained by any single policy decision or political leader."
They also noted that 2026 "does not look like it will be any more peaceful."
